Inmarsat Satellite Phones

There are four models of Inmarsat satellite phones available, all of which are larger desktop phones with data and fax capabilities from virtually anywhere in the world.

Mini-M Nera World Phone - this is the newest Inmarsat satellite phone available. The lid of the case acts as an external, detachable antenna. The Mini-M Nera offers voice, 2.4 Kbps data and 2.4 Kbps fax. You can also connect it to a PC, external fax, and second handset. The Inmarsat Mini-M Nera is suitable for outdoor use in the rain and in extreme temperatures. Average cost is $3,000 USD. The Mini-M Nera Worldphone is commonly available as a satellite phone rental.

Mini-M Thrane Phone - this is similar to the Mini-M Nera phone in functionality and comes in a magnesium case. The antenna lid is not detachable like the Nera however. Average cost is $3,000 USD.

M4 Nera WorldCommunicator Terminal - this is a portable satellite terminal that allows you to plug in a cordless handset phone. The M4 Nera offers 4.8 Kbps compressed voice, 64 Kbps data, along with ISDN, USB and Infrared interfaces. The Nera World Communicator connects with your PC, laptop or PDA to enable you to use your business applications. Average cost is $8,000 USD.

M4 Thrane CapSat Terminal - this is a portable satellite terminal similar in functionality to the M4 Nera, but lacks the ISDN interface. The M4 Thrane offes 2.4 Kbps voice, 64 Kbps data and comes in a magnesium case, which makes it suitable for outdoor use. Average cost is $9,000 USD.
