Guide to Satellite Phone Service, Equipment & Rental

Frequently Asked Question on Satellite Phone

How good is satellite phone reception?
Satellite phone reception is best with line-of-sight communications with the overhead satellite, so reception varies by time day and location. Trees and cloudy skies do not noticeably effect satellite phone reception, but but solar flares can play havoc with reception. In addition, satellite phones do not work very well inside of buildings, cars, or boats, unless you have a fixed external antenna that can connect to the satellite phone.

Do satellite phones look and work like cell phones?
In general, yes. The biggest difference is that satellite phones are generally somewhat larger and than modern cell phones, and have larger antennas. Otherwise, you look and work pretty much the same.

Are cell phones capable of receiving calls from satellite phones?
Yes, but incoming calls do not come directly from the satellite phone. Instead, the satellite phone call first goes up to the satellite, down to an earth station, and then gets routed to a land-based phone system. From there, the call can connect to any phone, cellular or otherwise.

Can satellite phones access the Internet?
Most satellite phones have data kit option that can be purchased separately. Data speeds are typically 9.6 KPS, which is not that fast, except for email.
